HEATHER ACTON
Daycare Attendant & Dog Boarder
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WORK WITH DOGS?
After years of working desk jobs, I needed a major change. My favorite thing is spending time with my 2 dogs, walking them on our property, and seeing how happy this time together makes them. I began to wonder if there was a way I could bring dogs into my daily life. I wanted to have more meaning in my work and figured caring for other people’s dogs would be a great start!
WHEN DID YOUR LOVE OF DOGS BEGIN?
I’ve always been an animal lover. We had a dog and cat growing up. I got my first dog as an adult when I met my husband in 2010. He had a one year old border collie mix, Baxter, and he quickly became my baby!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART ABOUT WORKING WITH DOGS?
I love meeting different dogs and seeing their different personalities. I am enjoying learning what makes them tick and how they interact with other dogs and people. My favorite part is seeing their happy faces and knowing that I’m helping them live their best lives!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE BREED?
I’m not sure if I have a favourite breed but I am partial to the mutts of the world! Labradors, retrievers and shepherd crosses have a special place in my heart. It’s been fun getting to know so many different breeds while working this job.
WHO ARE YOUR PETS AND WHAT ARE THEIR PERSONALITIES?
We have 2 dogs at home. Mopar is a 12 year old black lab. He is the sweetest boy, very chill but has always loved playing fetch and going for walks. Rex is a 2 year old German Shepherd cross that we adopted from Manitoba Underdogs Rescue. He is also pretty chill but has a lot of feisty energy! The boys quickly became best buds, and they love to wrestle, run and explore, or have a snooze together.
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL DOG EXPERIENCE BACKGROUND?
I have been working at Camp Canine since Oct 2025 and learning more each day. I have completed a Pet’s First Aid course and have done some volunteering with Manitoba Underdogs Rescue.
WHAT ANIMAL DO YOU IDENTIFY MOST WITH?
I’d have to say a bird. I like the freedom to explore the world but always knowing where home is.
